Air Berlin Acquires LTU
August 30, 2007 · Written by ITKT Media Partner · Print This Article
In March of this year Air Berlin announced to acquire 100% of LTU International
Airlines, one of Germany’s leading leisure carriers. The agreement was
pending final review and approval of the German Federal Cartel office. The
merger has now been approved making the Air Berlin Group the largest airline
in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany with a catchment area
around Düsseldorf of approximately 18 million inhabitants. LTU will remain a
legally independent company within the Air Berlin Group with its own
management; however there will be a seamless integration of LTU’s routes into
Air Berlin’s network in the European market thus providing North American
passengers more destinations throughout Europe.

Through the acquisition of LTU, Air Berlin will become the fourth largest airline
for European traffic, behind Ryan Air, Air France/KLM and Lufthansa. “With the
acquisition of LTU we are reacting to demands from the market. Many of our
customers, who especially appreciate our good service, have been asking us
for many years to start offering long-haul flights. This is now possible for us, we
now have the necessary feeder network through our European and domestic
German connections”, Joachim Hunold, Air Berlin’s CEO, explained.
Further updates and information will be provided as the merger progresses. In
the interim for more information on LTU please visit our website at
