Tripe seems to be very popular in Euador and I've heard similar stories from lots of people. The same happened to me- a bit of a dissapointment when I was expecting a nice steak!

When I was in Quito with a couple of other travlers we ordered the set menu, and our waitress gave us three choices for our main dish. We didn't understanding what they were, and went with what she recommended. It ended up being tripe in a stewy sauce. Being Mexican, tripe was nothing new to me, but for the others, they went a little hungry that day. Reading your article, I'm just glad I didn't end up with bull penis or hooves. Eek!
