(MIAMI, Fla., February 2012) – In an effort to meet travelers’ growing desire for authentic vacation experiences, a selection of Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton, and Hilton Garden Inn hotels in the Caribbean and Latin America today announced the “Authentically Local” package – an exciting new program that introduces travelers to local culture and language.

Available now through Dec. 31, 2012, the “Authentically Local” package features accommodations and a number of local touches including:

· Local culture consultants who provide can’t-miss authentic destination suggestions, such as snorkeling the crystal waters at Hilton Curaçao and hiking through a natural forest when visiting Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa

· A hands-on cultural experience specific to each hotel and destination including a choice of dance lessons, cooking classes, cocktail tastings, boat tours and more

· Traditional dinner with local flair, featuring everything from empanada appetizers at Hilton Buenos Aires and mole enchiladas at Hilton Mexico City Reforma to sancocho at Hilton Santo Domingo and conch at British Colonial Hilton Nassau

For guests who want to expand their cultural engagement and give the local language a try, hotels will provide a language immersion pin identifying the guest as an “Authentically Local” participant. Team members will then speak to the guest only in the local language. An English/Spanish/Portuguese/Papiamentu dictionary and a list of language schools in the area, should guests want to return for a formal language course, complete the package.

From tango teachings in Buenos Aires and rumba lessons in Cartagena, to traditional caipirinha-making class in São Paulo and rum tasting in Bogota, the program offers culturally-rich learning experiences to “get local” at each of the following hotels in the Caribbean and Latin America: Hilton Buenos Aires, Argentina; Hilton São Paulo Morumbi, Brazil; Hilton Belem, Brazil; Hilton Bogota, Colombia; Hilton Cartagena, Colombia; Hilton Garden Inn Santiago Airport, Chile; Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort; Hilton Mexico City Reforma; Hilton Villahermosa & Conference Center, Mexico; Hilton Garden Inn Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico; Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa; DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Central Pacific – Costa Rica; DoubleTree Cariari by Hilton San Jose, Costa Rica; British Colonial Hilton Nassau, The Bahamas; Hilton Barbados Resort; Hilton Curaçao; Hilton Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Hilton Trinidad & Conference Centre.

Guests booking “Authentically Local” should check with culture consultants at each property to learn about the most celebrated experiences known to the destination.

For example, Chrystian De La Barrera, culture consultant for Hilton Cartagena, shared, “When visiting Hilton Cartagena, guest should not miss out on the opportunity to discover Colombia’s rich history. The best cultural experience is offered during an ancient-walled city tour to get a glimpse of 18th century architecture and learn how the city has evolved.”

Other culture consultants had tips of their own. Food lovers visiting Hilton São Paulo Morumbi in Brazil should visit the city’s Mercado Municipal, São Paulo’s first grocery market built in 1928. When staying at Hilton Santo Domingo, not-to-be-missed local sites include the Colonial Zone and Los Tres Ojos Cave, an open-air limestone cave with beautiful blue, green, and yellow reflections considered one of the nation’s most visited attractions. Guests of Hilton Buenos Aires should stop for a snack at Cafe Tortoni – established in 1858, or visit with local artisans at Recoleta’s arts and craft fair.

For reservations, guests should call 1-800-HILTONS, contact the participating hotel directly, or call a local Hilton Reservations and Customer Care office, and request the Authentically Local package.

In Vienna accommodations are at the 3-star Hotel Post, just a five-minute walk from St. Stephen’s Cathedral. A 72-hour Vienna Card provides free transportation and museum discounts. You can enjoy a Hop On Hop Off bus tour of the city, discovering the Freyung and Kalvarienberg Easter Markets with their crafts, Easter decorations and culinary delights. There’s jazz for grownups and lots of fun for children: an Easter egg hunt, Easter bunny workshop, puppet shows and carousel. But the most beautiful Easter Market is the one at the 17th-century baroque Schönbrunn Palace, where you’ll get a snack, drink and a Schönbrunn cup to take home. Also included in the Vienna stay is a sausage sandwich and drink at the Bitzinger Würstelstand in the Old City, coffee and cake at the historic Café Central and dinner at the cozy Restaurant Führich, known for its Wiener Schnitzel and fiery gypsy music.

In Budapest you’ll stay in the modern 4-star Hotel Carlton at the foot of Fisherman’s Bastion near the Chain Bridge. A Hop On Hop Off tour of the city, a sightseeing cruise on the Danube, coffee and cake at the famous Café Gerbeaud and a meal at the Restaurant Kaltenberg (which has its own brewery and gypsy music) are all included.

Those who would prefer three nights in Salzburg instead of Budapest can pay $845 from March 27 to 31 or $986 from April 1 to 12, to stay in the comfortable 3-star Hotel Hofwirt; get a 48-hour Salzburg card for free transportation and museum, shop and restaurant discounts; enjoy a Mozart City Tour; coffee and cake at the traditional Café Fürst; and dinner at the charming K&K Restaurant am Waagplatz, which dates back to 1181.

(GJOGV, FAROE ISLANDS) — Most travelers know about Iceland, with its scenery that varies from stark lunar mountains to hot springs and geysers. In a country roughly the size of Ohio you discover dazzling landscapes — and a vibrant cultural and nightlife.

But a little farther east, in the North Atlantic Gulf Stream, lies a remote cluster of Nordic islands known as the Faroes, virtually unknown to North Americans. This archipelago boasts towering volcanic mountains, waterfalls that cascade from cliffs directly into the sea, paintbox houses, and only 50,000 inhabitants.

Both Iceland and the Faroes were settled over a thousand years ago by the Vikings. This summer, there’s a new tour program that offers a full week in the islands of the Viking settlers – four days in the Faroe Islands and three days in Iceland, with enough time for a side trip to Greenland, if you wish.

The program is from The Great Canadian Travel Company, North America’s foremost experts in travel to some of the world’s least-traveled regions. With departures every Monday from June through August, the weeklong “Iceland with the Faroe Islands” tour is priced at $2189 per person. Included are round trip airfare between Iceland and the Faroes, four night accommodation in the Faroes and three nights in Iceland, car rental in the Faroe Islands and a full day tour in Iceland.

The Faroe Islands are a self-governing region of Denmark, with its own parliament and flag. Faroese is the national language and is rooted in Old Norse. The climate is surprisingly moderate, with average high summer temperatures in the 70 degree range (20 degrees C). On the tour, you travel first to the Faroes, arriving on Monday afternoon. Upon arrival, you pick up your car and overnight at the Vagar Hotel. The afternoon is free to explore this lovely part of the Faroes, or simply relax in the hotel.

The next day, you drive to the island of Stremoy and cross “The Bridge Over the Atlantic” to the island of Eysturoy. Accommodations are at the modern Gjaargardur Guesthouse in the tiny seaside hamlet of Gjogv, population 36.

The next two days will be yours to explore the islands at leisure. The atmosphere changes from one island and one village to the next – it’s a whole society with its own history, its own language and its own culture. Head north past Klaksvik to the rugged headlands at Vidareidi, visit the old church at Kirkjuboreyn, wander through the Old Town of the capital city of Torshavn and enjoy the atmosphere of these unspoiled islands.

On Friday, you fly to Iceland and transfer to your hotel in the center of Reykjavik for a three-night stay. On Saturday, a full day “Golden Circle Tour” is included – a journey to the iconic sights of Iceland. On Sunday, there is a free day to explore the city, or perhaps take another optional day tour — whale watching, horseback riding, waterfalls or hiking, before your return flight to North America the next day.

(Montreal, January 25, 2012) - The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal team is especially proud to present James Taylor in a pre-opening concert to the 33rd edition of the Festival presented by TD in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan, on June 27, 2012 at 7:30 P.M., in the Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier Place des Arts, as part of the Événements spéciaux series. Tickets for this concert, presented in collaboration with Evenko, go on sale this Thursday at noon.

In 2008, the Festival and Evenko collaborated to offer us a magnificent concert by James Taylor, who was returning to Montreal after an 11-year absence, in the Bell Centre. As the many fans who flocked to the show can confirm, it was a genuine musical event! This year, they will collaborate again to invite the famed American singer-songwriter back, just after his recent European tour, to the exquisitely intimate confines of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier – a truly rare opportunity. For those too young to have caught the past 40 years of popular music, it’s an opportunity to discover the masterpieces that made Taylor an icon of ’70s folk and propelled him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For devoted fans, it’s an opportunity to bask in the glow of his unique vocal timbre and his timeless greatest hits, including How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You), Carolina In My Mind, Fire and Rain and, of course, You’ve Got A Friend, and to discover what a singer of this caliber, surrounded by the finest musicians, can deliver when he reworks immortal songs by Chuck Berry, Big Mama Thornton and Junior Walker.

(PANAMA CITY, Jan. 25, 2012) – Copa Airlines, subsidiary of Copa Holdings, S.A., announced that it will begin non-stop service in June 2012 from Panama to four new destinations: Recife, Brazil; Liberia, (Guanacaste), Costa Rica; Las Vegas, Nevada and the island of Curacao.

Passengers who depart or connect to these new flights through Copa’s Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International Airport will have access to a network of 63 destinations in 29 countries in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

As part of the airline’s strategic plan, Copa will add 10 new Boeing 737-800s Next Generation aircraft this year, for a total of 83 aircraft equipped with cutting-edge technology.

Copa announced the new destinations at a press conference in Panama during the reveal of its new corporate campaign and highlight the airline’s 2011 achievements. Last year, the airline transported 8.8 million passengers and experienced a growth in capacity of more than 20% over 2010.

“Our sustained growth in the past few years has reinforced our position as the leading Latin American provider of passenger and cargo services and made an impact on the business and tourism development of Panama and Latin America,” said Copa Airlines CEO, Pedro Heilbron. “We have opened doors to important key markets in the region with connectivity to 59 cities in the Americas.”

Copa’s achievements have been possible because “of our talented personnel, as we point out in our corporate campaign,” Heilbron added. “We will continue to strengthen our leadership position by offering the best service, flight frequencies and destinations for our passengers.”

Heilbron said that Copa Airlines will continue to add routes as well as enhance schedules and connections in 2012, and expects to transport 10 million passengers and to experience a 20% increase in capacity.

This growth will have a positive impact on the local economy. Copa expects to generate more than 626 new positions in 2012 and have more than 7,900 employees system wide by year’s end.

The airline also will reinforce its position as a world-class Panamanian company when it joins Star Alliance, the largest global airline alliance, in April 2012. As a result, Copa expects to increase codeshare agreements with additional airlines, especially in Asia and Europe. In addition, Copa will reaffirm its alliance with Continental Airlines (now United) and its award-winning frequent-flyer program: MileagePlus.

New service:

Recife, Brazil: Starting on June 23, 2012, Copa will offer four-times-weekly service to Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco in the northern part of Brazil. The new route will be Copa’s first in the northern region of Brazil and its seventh Brazilian destination.

Liberia, (Guanacaste) Costa Rica: This twice-weekly flight will increase travel options through the Hub of the Americas to the attractive province of Guanacaste, in Costa Rica, beginning June 24, 2012. Copa’s flight will provide the first jet service to this major tourist area from Latin America and will be Copa’s second destination in Costa Rica.

Las Vegas, Nev.: As part of its growing North American route system, Copa Airlines will offer four-times-weekly flights to Las Vegas, a major business, convention and tourism destination. The new flight, to begin June 27, 2012, will offer the first direct connecting service from Las Vegas to Central and South America. Las Vegas will be Copa’s seventh U.S. destination.

Curacao: Copa will operate flights to this major tourist destination four times a week starting June 10, 2012. Curacao is Copa’s 13th destination in the Caribbean.

Copa Airlines important achievements in 2011:

The airline achieved an on-time performance above 90 percent, among the best worldwide.

The airline added nine destinations to its network in 2011: Toronto, Canada; Brasilia and Porto Alegre, Brazil; Nassau, Bahamas; Asuncion, Paraguay; Chicago, Ill.; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Monterrey, Mexico; and Cucuta, Colombia. The airline rounded out the year with a total of 59 destinations in 28 countries in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean from its Hub of the Americas.

Copa ended 2011 with a fleet of 73 aircraft, having taken delivery of 10 Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft. The airline also generated more than 886 new employment positions.

In June 2011, Copa Airlines implemented an important operational change in its Hub of the Americas, expanding from four to six flight banks (connecting schedules), providing passengers with improved connection times and more frequent flights to all its destinations.

As a result of new routes and frequencies, Copa Airlines increased its available seat mile capacity by approximately 22 percent. The airline has maintained a sustained growth of 15 percent over the last five years.

(January 13, 2012, GUAM) – Guam’s first and original Chamorro cultural theme park recreates Chamorro life 500 years ago. Chamorros are Guam’s first inhabitants. Lina’la’ Park rests on an actual Chamorro village, dating over 1,000 years ago. Latte stones, pottery, and other artifacts reveal that villagers lived there until the beginning of the Spanish era in the 17th century.

The park features a visitor center displaying cultural artifacts and a brief film about the Chamorro creation belief. A nature walk filled with tropical flowers, medicinal plants, and fruit trees leads visitors to the recreation of an ancient Chamorro village.

Visitors are greeted by men and women wearing what looks like traditional garb — a loincloth and small bandeau top for women. When Magellan landed on Guam in 1521, islanders were mostly naked, however, women sometimes wore a small triangular apron called a tifi, or a skirt of grass or leaves suspended from a belt.

The pre-Magellan stage at Lina’la’ is filled with a handful of pitched roof houses that would have made up any village. The largest A-frame domain housed the chief and was founded on impressive latte stones. Visitors can climb into the house via a wooden staircase.

Some latte structures served as guma’ uritao, or a men’s house. This was a meeting place for men and living quarters for bachelors. Latte structures also sheltered ocean going outrigger sailing canoes called proas and may have served as a place to build the proas.

A central cooking house at the park contains a chahan, or pit, where root vegetables and fish were cooked atop fiery rocks and covered with leaves. Coconuts (niyok) were abundant on the island then as they are now. Ancient Chamorros fashioned a coconut grader with a sharp clamshell, which visitors can see in action.

Other houses were used to treat illness and contained a mortar and pestle (lommok) used for mincing herbs. Massage was also employed as treatment. Ancient Chamorros called upon the shamen (makåhna) and sorcerers (kakåhna) who were believed to possess the powers to cause or cure illness by calling upon the spirits of their ancestors.

There were no indigenous, four-legged animals in the Marianas. Domestic animals such as pigs, chickens, cats, dogs, pygmy quails, spotted deer, painted quails, goats, cattle and carabao were introduced to Guam during the Spanish period (1665-1898). The park’s animal zone houses pens containing deer, carabao, pigs, goats, ducks, and chickens. Coconut crabs, monitor lizards, and a brown tree snake are also on display.

“Seeing is believing and a walk through Lina’la’ is like stepping back in time,” said GVB General Manager Joann Camacho. “The park not only preserves our Chamorro history, but makes it come alive.”
